About Mike Johns
I'm Mike Johns - the owner of Mama's Boy Design, LLC. I started MBD in 2015 as a side business. At the time I was working as Chief Regulator in the banking industry.
So how did a guy with a regulatory background wind up in the world of embroidery? Well, I guess you could say that the creative arts have always been part of my life. As a kid I took art lessons. As a teenager I got involved in theatre. My maternal grandmother taught me how to crochet. My paternal grandfather does amazing needlework. My mom (who also works with me at MBD) can do just about anything from sewing, embroidery, cross-stitch, scrapbooking, etc. My dad is a great wood-worker and is amazing at restoring old cars. My brother, who is one heck of a mechanic, is also great with a sketch pad and pencil. I guess you could say it runs in the family.
I went to college at Florida State University and received my B.A in Theatre and my M.F.A. in Theatre with a focus in Costume Design and Technology. Between pursuing my degrees, I served in the U.S. Navy, both enlisted and as an Officer. During my military career I was fortunate enough to travel the world (Join the Navy, See the World, right?) and even got to live overseas for a couple of years. After completing my M.F.A., I worked for a professional theatre before moving into the financial regulatory industry. And that brings us to present day.
My goal with MBD is to spread my love for all things creative to as many people as possible by teaching them how to use their embroidery and sewing machines to their full potential. At the same time I love learning new things myself. That's one of the best things about working in the creative arts, you are always learning and there is ALWAYS something new out there! I look forward to meeting and talking with as many of you as I can.
