Basic Alteration Skills
Everyone should have some basic sewing skills they can pull out in a pinch. You never know when that perfect pair of pants will be just two or three inches too long or when your favorite coat will mysteriously lose a button. With some basic skills, you can repair or modify your clothes. Join us for a year long journey of hand and machine sewing where each month will build on the skills learned in the previous months.
January – Invisible zipper
February – replace zipper in jeans
March – Lengthening or Shortening a Hem (pants)
April – Lengthening or Shortening a Hem (dress/skirts)
May –Shortening curved bottom shirt/blouse
June – Replace separating zipper in light weight jacket or hoodie
July – Taking up shoulders in dress or top
August – Taking in/letting out sides dress or top
September – Taking in/letting out waistband (pants)
October – Shortening cuffed shirt sleeves
November – Replace zipper - regular
December - Patch tears/holes
General sewing supplies:
- Sewing machine that you know how to use, in good working order with foot pedal, power cord, and owner's manual sewing machine needles and bobbin(s)
- thread
- scissors
- hand sewing needles
- thread conditioner
- pins (glass head strongly recommended) and pin cushion
- tape measure
- seam ripper
- disappearing ink pen

Requirements: | Students should bring their sewing machine so that they can learn to use the features on their machine. If you do not own a machine, a machine will be provided for you. Students must bring basic sewing supplies listed in the class description. |
